One of the galleries says that ‘from the mid seventies’ he concentrated on individual pieces. Some of his paper collages are dated relatively recently - 2012 - so not as early as I was expecting

He told me that he did the card/paper/wood things when he was a little short of money to buy clay and also during the winter, as if he had clay at that time it was often unusable, as it froze. He did say that he wasn't terribly keen on them but people seemed to be, which I suspect meant that he got pestered by galleries to make some more recently.

On the Stoneshill/Spike Pottery thread? Looks like Philpot’s Maltby mark that he posted on that thread.

The decoration is typical of Maltby’s work, and it looks the same as this mark which also has Maltby’s M mark

John Maltby - Page 4 Empty Stoneshill Pottery, John Maltby? Stoneware Trinket Box

Post by benwilliams October 3rd 2019, 9:51 am

Just checking this 10cm trinket box is Stoneshill, Maltby.?
I saw a similar SP Mark ( more curved) on the Maltby thread and same patterns of tableware online.
Thank you everyone for your kind help.

I have been going through my old photos recently and came across this selection from one of my previous exhibitions. After putting them on display I did decide to keep the jug for myself.

Nice. Very nice! You can see clearly why John Maltby is so popular. As a matter of interest, could you give a date to the little rider?

I have a horse and Knight which Maltby made a few years ago. He’s still making them; I don’t know when he started

The image above was from late 2014 and I would have bought that directly from him earlier that year. He was making more smaller pieces, such as the horse and rider, then and from what he said I would suspect he might have started making them around 2010 or slightly later.

Now this was a curious beastie of a Maltby. The rough hewn wooden backing must be quite rare. Also one of the figures had fallen off an hAd been lost. Cheapo? No, again it went for a substantial price. Perhaps its rarity made it unusual.]

Very sad to say, John Maltby has died. He passed away in hospital last Tuesday, with heart trouble. He had a major heart attack in the mid 1990's that led to his becoming more of a sculptor than a potter.  A genuinely great Ceramicist who will be incredibly missed.
It has been a very sad year of the passing of the Greats.
John Maltby 1936-2020. RIP.

The King of them all.

I won't profess to be that knowledgeable on all things studio pottery but I guess that already well-priced pieces will now start to go exponentially higher. With that in mind my one tip for the future is David Hockney, he's getting on and is a heavy smoker. Stock up on prints, posters etc.
Apologies if its a bit too cynical for christmas day.
Have a good day everyone.
