I think the design is Odyssey by Alan Clarke

Be aware that paintress's marks were often 're-used' so in this case the mark is similar to Patricia Wells but Oddysey pattern was around from 1999 to about 2006/8 ish so it will be the mark for Lorna Whitmarsh. You are correct in thinking that it is more modern than early 70's.
The Poole book has about 4 editions so the earliest 2 - 1995 and 1998, I think - won't have later paintress marks in but it is in the 3rd edition p.234.

It is not uncommon for ebay sellers to be adamant something is earlier than it actually is because they have gone by the first paintress mark they see rather than looking at the item itself.

I bought it for £18 at a boot sale and the seller didn't know anything about it at all. I really like it so wasn't focused on how much it was worth, just that it's so small and perfectly formed. I have to admit that the Poole collecting bug has grabbed me which is why I want to learn more about it.

Thank you to all for your information. It's quite clear I have a lot to learn!

PS - the book I bought definitely won't include 1999 - 2008. It's a first edition ISBN 0 903685 41 8

You see the small, living glaze vases for 'mad money' here and there but I wouldn't want to pay any more than your 18 for the smallest size pieces.
Later editions of the Poole book just have a chapter or two added at the end to cover the latest designs and patterns, plus a few corrections.

Poole cat. First one I’ve seen. I believe it was designed by Barbara Linley Adams

Bought these today in a charity shop for everyday use. 22 pieces in all.
Late Poole Daisy Chain pattern, no doubt for the mass market. Ideal buy

for us though, being brightly coloured and a great change to what we normally use. Does anybody have any information on them?  Would be grateful and interested to find out. All have the same mark, but some of them have what looks like an added S mark. as shown in the photo.

They would seem to be a slight variation on the 'Daisy'pattern, which was produced around 2006-2008 ish. I know they used the dk red 'Oddysey' pattern in a tableware range though I think the additional costs involved of testing the glazes for toxic chemicals etc meant it wasn't economic - was it ever a good sales idea ? The S is probably a decorators mark

That's a really good example of an Alan Clarke design. Possibly called planets

Thank you dantheman. I read that this model was discontinued between 2002-2008 so it will be made after 2002 and the name of the artist will remain a mystery for now

Poole people what is this? Bought it because I thought it was a strong design and I like it a lot.

Is it a a test piece? What do the letters mean?

The moulded 'Poole england' on the base indicate it is c.2001 or later. Looks like a test piece for glazes.
