Re: Powell and Llangollen Studio Pottery (Wales)
Anyone know why they made cockerel as per the top of the page? It's a form from Portugal.
If you check out the Nandos logo it includes the same cockerel (Nandos started in Portugal) and it's a symbol of the Barecelos region of Portugal. It's from a fable Rooster of Barcelos

Re: Powell and Llangollen Studio Pottery (Wales)
I don’t think it’s that close a match. The similarities are just that they’re cockerels with piped slipware. But the Portuguese cockerels are a bit more showy; like they’re displaying their feathers during courting. While the Llangollen one looks like it’s stretched up to crow.

Re: Powell and Llangollen Studio Pottery (Wales)
I think it’s Powell Pottery; early Llangollen Pottery. RP for Rhys Powell, decorated by his wife Jean in the early 60s

I think it's from the 60s.
Una Dyer and Clare Richards (nee Littleboy) took over the pottery from the Powells in the late 50s and continued into the late 60s before it was taken over by Lloyd Thomas and switched to slip moulded pieces.

LLANGOLLEN Studio Pottery Tube Lined Pony EISTEDDFOD RHYL 1953
Here i have a small tube lined white clay studio pottery pony looking very tired :) It has a lovely tactile feel
and base is marked for the Rhyl Eisteddfod 1953 not sure if it may have been given as a prize or maybe sold on stalls at
the event itself, I would love to hear any views as to the make and why it was produced thanks for looking..

Re: Powell and Llangollen Studio Pottery (Wales)
Rhys (Taffy) and Jean Powell were family friends when I was a child in Wrexham in the 1950s and early 1960s. Jean's maiden name was Webster and I have some of her unglazed figures marked inside with her name as Jean Webster. I also have a glazed piggy bank made for me as a birthday present in 1957 by Taffy. Pictures of these are in the posts below along with images of of several pieces of Powell Potterry Llangollen ware from the 1950s although these are unmarked.
In the early 1960s, Taffy and Jean established a new pottery in an old watermill at Nannerch near Mold in North Wales and I remember visiting this on several occasions. The large milk (llaeth) jug in a later post is marked Rhys Powell, Nannerch and dates from this period. The "Jack" tankard was made for my father.
