Hi,
This the first of 2 pieces of hornsea that I picked up over the weekend, i am assuming that the pattern came from the John Clappison era but I don't recognise the design. Can you help please?

Hi Bryn, they don't, as far as I know, have individual names for the different designs that the Slipware range came in - they were referred to by the shape. Your dish is from the same range as the two slipware dishes I've posted at the top of page 2 of the Hornsea thread (click the link below).

I don't know the pattern name for your set - they're not shown in any of my books or archives however they're definitely from the 1971 Geometric Cruet range decorated with various different designs - most by John Clappison and a couple by Alan Luckham.

John Clappison "White bud" jardiniere from the home décor range -early late 50s /early 60s

Another 50p find -"~~Cordon~~" cruet from mid 60s. There is no base stamp identification so identification was difficult. However, The rubber bungs were typical Hornsea ones NOW KNOWN TO BE ONION DESIGN

In an interview with Clappison,I was interested to read that in 1966 he was given free time to make what he liked,this was the time when he produced his best piece simply called 'the girl'

In 1955 John Clappison introduced the distinctive Elegance range,decorated with a vertical stripe using a labour intensive method of applying masking tape strips before each item was aerographed with colour.

Hello Ed,

Throughout the time John was at the Pottery, he was'nt allowed to sign pieces. All the work produced had to say "designs by the Hornsea Design Team". All my father's work since leaving the Pottery is signed by him and sometimes dated. These designs have been available through the Hornsea Pottery Collectors society who hold meetings throughout the year, you just need to become a member. John usually attends these and often gives talks.
