Re: GERBINO MOSAIC WORKSHOP - VALLAURIS FRANCE
I figured I would bore you with a quick profile of the man behind this wonderful mosaic technique.
Jean Gerbino began his career in ceramics by working as a turner for the Massier workshop in Vallauris (1902-1905) He then left to set up his own pottery in Algeria where he was influenced by the wonderful Arab mosaic work and upon returning to Vallauris in 1919,he strove for 11 years, working in many of the Vallauris workshops to perfect the pottery that still bears his name.

my latest Gerbino bowl, the mixture of clay colours in the mosaic pieces seems more labour intensive than I have seen before, the walls of the bowl are also thicker.
I have an idea this may be an older piece but will have to research further....watch this space!
PS it cost £3.50

I'm fairly sure this is an early Gerbino stamp,I haven't seen the word mosaique stamped on any modern piece

Although it's a modern piece,I just love the decoration on this Gerbino bowl, the quality was kept very high right up to the end of production

This bowl was not made by Jean GERBINO who died in december 1966. It was made in the GERBINO workshop after 1980. At this time, I was ruling the workshop so it's easy for me to recognize the piece.

Hi Yvan,
Many thanks for the info,if you have time to give us a brief history of the workshop I know many of the members here would find it extremely interesting.
ps
are any of the pieces on the forum by Gerbino himself?
Dan

I have no time to make an extensive search.
When I issued a search on the keyworg GERBINO, it returned nothing.
You may find some infos on my iDisk :
Several items may be interesting for you in the folder

If you know where are GERBINO pieces described here, may you post here infos allowing me to find them. I'm retired but I'm more than heavily busy ;-)

Re: GERBINO MOSAIC WORKSHOP - VALLAURIS FRANCE
On the label is written
Email
Vieux
Grès
de
VALLAURIS
This means that it's a pottery fired to less than 1000° celsius but is covered with a glaze designed to approximate the aspect of stoneware.
Happily, quite nobody use this kind of glaze nowadays.

Re: GERBINO MOSAIC WORKSHOP - VALLAURIS FRANCE
do you have examples of pre December 1966 Gerbino pottery to show us Yvan?
I would be interested in seeing the stamp on the base to make it possible for me to identify early pieces when they are for sale

RIGHT. I would say 1940-1960.
If you really paid it this price, it's a bargain.

I retrieved this link :
http://www.nice-panorama.com/Vallauris/Exposition-Jean-Gerbino-Vallauris-2007
It's the huge exhibition organized at the end of 2007.
We published a catalog of 48 pages.
It display the stamps and the more interesting component (from my point of view) is a DVD with about 1000 photos.
It's always available in the Library of the Museum.
price 20€
I ignore the shipping cost .
