Re: Teabowls
Genuine question: when does a bowl/cup become a "tea bowl"? OK, often a potter may create it specifically as that, in the sense of the Japanese tradition. But is the term also used as a retrospective marketing term by sellers? Asking because I'm often genuinely puzzled about what to call small cup or bowl-like pots

Re: Teabowls
There are no hard and fast rules for studio potters. Although, as a general rule of thumb, if it has a wide base and straight or sloping sides it’s a beaker - there are beakers on this thread. If it has a small foot it’s a tea bowl. But it’s up to the collector and the potter to agree that what is being sold is a tea bowl is one and not just a beaker with a fancy price on it. Those potters who have some appreciation of the Japanese art form are more successful at making them, while putting their own interpretation on it, than those who don’t.
