The Portobello shape of which range your teapot is part of doesn't appear to have been very successful, as it isn't commonly seen. Brought out in 1967 and continued into the early 1970s.

Midwinter Pottery - Page 6 Empty Midwinter 12" square plate - Whispering Grass pattern

Post by Daydream Thu Oct 20, 2016 6:29 pm

Hi to all you knowledgeable people out there, I'm hoping someone can help with some information.

I have recently acquired a single 12 inch square plate in the wonderful Whispering Grass pattern.

Could someone tell me: was this size plate produced for any other Midwinter pattern?

Thanks

There were larger plates/platters in other patterns.
I think they called them "chop" plates.

Thanks for the info.  I'd seen plenty of the usual oval/oblong platters in several  different sizes, but not come across the large square plates before.

Cheers :) It's at the local charity shop but didn't look interesting enough to warrant the price tag

It wasn't a big selling pattern at the height of Midwinter's popularity because, although hand-painted, the colours are rather dull.

Midwinter 'Lorna Doone' hors d'oeuvre chintz tray. Seems to be a scarce shape for this pattern, unless i'm just looking in all the wrong places.

Yes 1950s Midwinter. Looks like a Manx cat, not a model I recall seeing before.
Possibly designed by Nancy Great-Rex, in the 1940s.

I think DD is most likely to be correct but she did design animals from the mid 1930s and it might be pre-War. The most famous were Larry the Lamb and Peggy the Calf. I have seen a bear but not this cat before.

I don’t know their pattern names but the plant is a Trillium.

Not shown in the book, no pattern called Trillium, also can't match a description,
so it may be just one of those un-named unknows.

It might have been just one of a set of tableware with different plants on each plate
