Midwinter Pottery

This is probably the only item that I have posted on here that needs to be photographed upside down!

S-P I do like Conran designs how about tea for 3. not many folks could put 3 sized conran design tea pots together .[img][/img]

It looks the kind of pattern that would have sold too. Maybe the yellow banding was too time consuming - is that hand-painted like the grey leaves?

S-P all handpainted they were back in the day , but clearly there was some reason it was not put into production, shame as it is quite a nice pattern although some what subdued for Jessie's work , and there may lie the answer.

But with Jessie now no longer with us we shall never know .

not all the patterns from this period were hand-painted. This pattern is was put into production and islisted as "unamed" in the excellent book by Stephen Jenkins

Andy , i will have to dig my Jenkins books out i have never ever seen it before and i thought i had owned almost every pattern that had been put into production plus a few others that had not , but sadly no longer with me.

And of course you are correct in saying not all were handpainted , but i was not considering the patterns with floral sprays as i only realy collect the designs of Jessie Tait and Terence Conran .

This is about as near as i get to Floral , Cottage Ivy on a 16" platter fully handpainted one of the earliests designs by Jessie for Midwinter .

Steven does mention an un-named pattern on the Stylecraft shape and I quote, "hand-painted border pattern with six fine lines decorated with simple leaves and dots". This could be E-D's pattern despite it having seven fine lines but, as Steven hasn't mentioned any colours, I assume that he hadn't seen the pattern at the time.

I wont forget having supper with jessie Tait. I had been researching all day in Stoke and she kindly picked me to take me to her house. I had forget about supper so half way through the evening my stomach started to rumble. She asked me if I had eaten and I said yes but she soon realised I was being polite. She made me a lovely pizza with water cress. Another night had dinner in a local Indian curry house with Eve Midwinter-both mazing women.

Andy you are a lucky man , i read she thought it was no more than a job and never understood the fuss about her work , the lady was amazing and so prolific , moving with the times through at least 3 decades not many designers can claim that . i hold her in verry high esteem and feel that her work is still verry much over looked by many.
I have been verry lucky to have bought aprox 12 pieces of her early hand thrown tubelined pieces inc the large jug in the latest addition of Steves book although now no longer with me .

Bought off the Bay earlier this week a nice and scarce 14" platter in Patio by Jessie Tait, on the Fashion shape also came with a 12" platter ,i am one verry happy Bunny .

Hi I came across this chap quite a lot when I was researching for one of my books. The designer is Charles Cobelle and an American. I think he entered a design competition or more likely that Roy Midwinter saw his work in the US when he was over there getting ideas for his new ranges etc

I have looked again on the net and it seems he was a French artist that went to live in America. This isn't his only pattern but probably the only one for Midwinter

He also designed Desert Scene for midwinter as well.
