ID Help Please - Pair of Lidded Porcelain Pots

Post by AlanH on October 1st 2012, 6:29 pm

Hello again - Can't find maker in my book of marks, it look like A above an 'o' or 'd', as the mark is right on the base part may be missing.
The mark on the lighter pot is much less distinct.
Thanks guys,
Alan.

Could they be ginger jars?

Like the bulk of studio pottery produced today they might be based on a practical form but with no expectation that they are going to be used.

Without knowing the size saying what they are based on is difficult but ginger jars would be wider in relationship to the height, so they could be based on tea containers.

Stoneware jug marked A - Andrew Crouch?

Post by denbydump on July 14th 2014, 12:42 am

4.5 in high, nice glaze effects.
The mark is raised in slight relief, but is glazed over, so I've drawn it as I can see it under the glaze.
Can't make out a dot, but it is like the Avoncroft marks shown here, which in themselves, don't exactly
correspond with those shown in the marks book. But I'm not familiar with his range of work.

Believe it's by Andrew Crouch, but the clay is darker than any I've seen.

The Avoncroft mark and Andrew Crouch's mark are very similar, although the Avoncroft mark is generally smaller.

My money would be on this being by Andrew Crouch as Potty says.

There were a number of pieces sold at a well known auction house in the south of England back in March with a Geoffrey Whiting attribution that went for 450 + premium. Those were most definitely by Andrew Crouch so they can be confused.

Thanks guys, There could be a C/O under the A, now I know what I'm looking for,
but being in a circle I would never have found that one.
Potty, I think my pix were a little dark, it's normal buff stoneware.
