Jane Hamlyn (Doncaster)

Jane has been producing some great saltglazed pottery for over thirty years now but I've just started to buy her work (better late than never)

Here's an exhibition piece that I bought last month

an early saltglazed pot with lid 85 mm diam

these saltglazed pepper pots were made in the 70's for Cranks restaurants

another early lidded pot,this time in porcelain 65mm diameter

porcelain body,salt glazed then slip trailed decoration & stamp
I love the quirky handle too

a couple of unusual pieces,the teapot lacks the usual Hamlyn saltglaze and the mug has just a small lick of what seems to be sodaglaze?

I love this tree lined landscape decoration

Most saltglaze collectors would assume this mark belonged to Jane Hamlyn as it is virtually identical but Jane never used the glaze pictured on the interior of this pot nor did she make lids with this swirling decoration.

I think she's a really good, consistent potter too. And another northern one I have a couple of pieces by her in my collection. The first is pretty early, the seller said it dated to the early 1970s when Jane was just starting out and that she had swapped it for a cheese from the seller's mother who ran a dairy at the time! Square stoneware dish with lugs, saltglazed with trailed decoration on inside. 6.9cm (height) 21.5cm (width).




And my most recent piece is a pretty frilly saltglazed mug which I think dates to the 1980s. Aberystwyth have a very similar one in their collection if I remember rightly. 8.8cm (height).

Nicely potted and decorated, no marks at all.

When I saw your group of recently acquired items elsewhere on the Forum I thought that this pot was an early Jane Hamlyn.

The reason being that I have this below: -

what's the base like on your's SP?

I did wonder about Jane Hamlyn, as Dave's vase is very similar to the shapes she used for the vases with applied flowers. (I think those were great and it's a shame she no longer seems to make them)

I'd never seen a vase that shape without the flowers until yours SP, I think your probably right.

It doesn't really show in the photograph below but it has been cut the same way as yours has - you might just be able to make that out at the edges.

Certainly looks very similar to mine, I will have to contact her to see if it is one of hers. When you say early, what date do you think?

She has been using that mark since 1975 and I don't recall seeing anything by her that was quite like mine so I was thinking 1980 or before. I could be completely wrong though.
