Re: Poole Pottery 1960-1980 Part Two
The range was only made for about 2yrs - 1978 - 80ish. Never been too popular for collectors so consequently pieces don't tend to cost too much. Sienna name comes from colours used - raw sienna is a form of naturally occurring iron oxide while burnt sienna has been heated to alter its chemical comp. Commonly know as yellow and red ochre today. Raw and burnt Umber are also forms of iron oxide originally found in the Umbria region of Italy. Thats your paint/pigment chemistry lesson for the day.

Seal Stoneware sculpture #768, first designed in 1979.
I think the decorator is Faith Hole.

There was also a stoneware plate that was commissioned by the WWF with a seal on it, in an edition of 7,500.

It is possible that the dish should have had a footrim so that it wouldn't look like a tableware dish. Sometimes you will find delphis dishes that are marked as shape 3A or shape4A rather than the usual shape 3 or 4. These dishes are the same diameter but do not have footrims. What probably happens is that towards the end of the day the paintresses would run out of the appropriate dishes so would go to the nearby tableware section and take blank dishes to decorate. Sometimes shape 49 dishes turnup with no footrim and an indentation to the centre showing them to be small saucers.
