In 1986 he and his wife, the ceramic artist Karen Erland, set up their own wood-fire kiln workshop, Smiå keramikk, in the town of Bryne, also in Jæren. Erland and his wife ran Smiå keramikk for twenty years, before moving the wood-fire kiln to a larger workshop in another part of Bryne.
