Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
I picked this mug up today. All Keith Murray pieces I have seen before have just been plain and undecorated. As this has a line through the signature I wondered if this is a mug that somebody else has decorated?
Any thoughts and suggestions appreciated John

Re: Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
Seems to be on top but I have tried carefully scraping a small part of the line over the signature and there is nothing coming away as I might have expected

Re: Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
Ed, I agree that the decor is not great quality, do you think this may just be an amateur painter (perhaps iT as painted underneath) has done some type of overpainting.
If this was the case is there a method of removing the paint and would this be worthwhile, ie would any attempt ruin the original finish

Re: Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
It looks like an amateur painted a decor on a plain mug, covered the Keith Murray signature and put is own.
Re: Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
I would certainly say the decor was by iT whoever they might be , i doubt if you can remove the decoration , maybe someone else could help with something like that , tenpot might know .
I personally would flog it as is .

Re: Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
Keith Murray trained as an architect, And as such this informed his designs and clean styling, I think a painted mug like this would not have been his 'cup of tea' pardon the pun!
Having said that, see the following quote from one of my books:
"Decoration is always integral to the form, rather than being painted on or applied, and ribbing and fluting are common...the only exception is a series of tableware which was patterned."
Patterened does not neccesarialy mean painted with flowers tho! :->

Re: Keith Murray Wedgewood mug
there is a decorated teaset with the same shape handles in andrew caseys 20th century designers in britain but not the same decoration also a similar shaped mug but with ribbing no.3970 I dont think that is his decoration but if it is fired on then no way to remove it,
