I have this painting, bought around 15 years ago in Torquay, UK. It is signed Max Savy. I have tried to research the artist but there appear to be two 'Max Savy's' one American and one French. Can anyone help to identify which Max Savy this piece may be by? Any other information that may be useful is also greatfully received. Thank you.

The French Max Savy painted in the style of the Impressionists and his work had a typical palette of the South of France (yellows, oranges etc.). Although he has an auction record his work does not appear to be valuable, as I found that an oil on canvas by him (18 inches by 21.5 inches) sold at Bonhams, Los Angeles for $441 (approx. £280).

Your painting stylistically and colour wise is totally different and is by the American, or maybe one of the American, Max Savys - it is a great name to adopt. He seems to sell his own work from an outside pitch at holiday resorts on the coast of the US and specialises in harbour scenes like yours. He is most likely based in Rockport Massachusetts, which is on 25 miles north east of Boston at the tip of the Cape Ann peninsula.

Basically painting and selling to tourists, his work will be of no interest to the secondary market.

Today while walking down Piccadilly in Central London I seem to have solved the mystery of Max Savy. Probably of no interest to anyone but me but at least it made me happy.

At the western end on the railings at the north edge of Green Park the area is used by people to sell paintings that clearly all originate from China despite some having vague representations of London scenes.

Not all London scenes but others as well, including an oil of a coastal scene with boats bearing the signature Max Savy.

So it's just one of the fictitious signatures put on oil paintings that come out of Chinese factories.
