they made this design at dozens of Italian potteries but I'm not sure it's possible to tie yours down even to a specific area of Italy

Thanks - yes, could quite possibly be Italian. The decoration on the rim is very like the De Simone style, but the overall feel is much finer than that pottery.

the base is more unusual than the top and could possibly set it apart from all the others who reproduced that type of decoration

Your platter is by Jani-keramik in Laholm, Sweden. The pottery was founded in 1949 by Jane Wåhlstedt and Nils Larsson. Jane was responsible for form and decor and Nils glazing and burning. Your platter is from the early production. In 1951 Jane introduced the sgraffitto technique. The pottery was closed in 1970.

Thanks again Jakjo - I've just paged through that whole thread... what gorgeous pieces! I hadn't heard of Jani before, but will be keeping my eyes open for more pieces now (although how many made it to Australia I'm not sure!).
