Bishop & Stonier (BISTO)
Ok, so here are a few pieces from my Bishop & Stonier (BISTO) collection - a Staffordshire factory that definitely deserves more recognition. They started life in 1891 as the last partnership in a history of one factory, and eventually were bought out by the George Jones factory in the 1930s. Their success was mainly in exported domestic goods, but there is also a strong body of decorative works as evidenced by this early 20th century selection.
This jug uses a design by the designer/illustrator Louis Rhead who was the uncle of the mightily successful Charlotte Rhead. It's unclear whether he had any direct involvment with the Bisto factory or whether they simply "borrowed" his design.
oriental inspired designs were a re-occurring theme for Bisto wares.

Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
1930s production after the Bishop name had been taken over by the George Jones partnership - probably a biscuit jar or for preserves?
Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
Powell, Bishop & Stonier
should be produced between 1878-1891?
shows traces of use...
Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
That's a nice pattern, haven't seen it before. I recently did a post on my blog which showed various various designs all on this shape of jug (which originally would have been part of a wash set... you don't have the bowl too do you?).
Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
if anyone on the forum ever happens upon any trade adverts or articles about the Powell / Bishop & Stonier factories please do let me know - i'd be very interested to see them!
Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
a sneaky one, as this is about 20 years out of period for this forum, but hey, who's counting?
(marriage of Oriental Ivory range PB&S cheese dome and gothic Pugin-esque P&B base)
Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
I've spent the afternoon washing up - cleaning pieces from my collection that have been stored in the loft. Had one breakage - a lovely teapot retailed by Harrods, , but touching wood, no more. I thought this would be a good opportunity to show you some Bistoboy bums with their cute birthmarks! xx
Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
Are these pieces also going to auction? Or are you still collecting them?

Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
I realised that the pattern was Warwick, but I couldn't find which B&S it referred to. I had looked at Bishop and Stonier but decided, obviously incorrectly, that it wasn't them! So thank you for putting me right. Mal

Re: Bishop & Stonier (Staffordshire)
That mark was used 1891-1910.
However it seems Brown & Steventon used a similar B & S mark 1900-23,
but I have no pictorial examples of either.
