Unidentified porcelain bowl decorated in gold colour.
Recently purchased at auction, my first reaction was that it was by Mary Rich but I have shelved that idea.
There is possibly a mark in the foot ring, but it’s been covered with glaze and is too hard to read.
I have thought it was an O or Q or even an S.
Any help or suggestions gratefully recieved.
Thanks in advance
The mark (if it’s there) is harder to see when close up.

Re: Unidentified porcelain bowl decorated in gold colour.
Any chance you could get a clearer picture of the possible mark/base please?

What that I can tell, Angela Marshall seems like a decent possibility, but there are others that did this sort of thing. John Davidson would be my 2nd best guess, though I believe there was another lady with an unusual name that also did similar (not Emmie Philps), I think she trained under Bridget Drakeford (who is also vaguely someone else this could be by).

Re: Unidentified porcelain bowl decorated in gold colour.
Hi Potty,
I’ve looked at work by Angela Marshall and I can see her work is similar but not conclusively by her. John Davidson is a potter whose work I am familiar with but I can’t say that this piece is by him.
The third person you mentioned I think I came across her work by accident but I can’t find her…..but I will.
Thanks for your assistance

Hi potty - I think the potter I accidentally came across was Bridget Drakeford and I haven’t discounted her yet so if I can trace the woman she trained then clearly it will be another possible.
Thanks again

Any luck taking a better pic of the possible mark? If the mark is also in gold, that would tie in with Angela Marshall. Her mark is often what looks like a small V with a dot between the arms of the V, usually in gold. Sometimes it's mistaken for Bernard Forrester's F mark. Though it does seem a bit out of place being on the rim of the foot like that.

Re: Unidentified porcelain bowl decorated in gold colour.
Well the foot is a bit more like some of Bridget Drakeford's, the decoration and glaze does fit with some of her bit earlier work, though I've never seen an unmarked piece by her.
From what I can see, the mark does not appear to be intentional.

Agreed potty - I think there may be a faint mark in the footring but it’s impossible to work out what it is - but learnt a little more about a few more potters which is all part of my education!!!

Re: Unidentified porcelain bowl decorated in gold colour.
Phyllis Dupuy was the lady I had forgotten. Not one I know much about, so have a look online I guess.
She often used a small star mark, impressed into the footrim itself or a hand writted signature. (or both)
