Re: Warren Mackenzie Pot?
It's difficult to say, as many potters make facetted pots. If you can find some other pieces of his in this oatmeal type glaze, then that might narrow it down.

I think it’s unlikely to be by Mackenzie

Who told you that it was made by Warren Mackenzie and what reasons did they give?

Unmarked Warren Mackenzie pots are difficult to ID unless you can find another pot online that matches the shape, clay and glaze. Even avid collectors argue over an ID of his work if it's not one of his iconic forms.
I don’t know if he identifies pots for strangers but Steve Basile of Curated Ceramics is worth asking

Warren Mackenzie pots are very rare in the UK. His connection with the UK being that he was an apprentice at the Leach St Ives Pottery. But it really would be very unusual for this pot to be his.

He did have a pottery in 1963 briefly at Dartington, philpot, but of the two pots that I have seen from there, both have been marked and had iron glazes (browns).

Re: Warren Mackenzie Pot?
He’s potted on sabbatical at the Leach Pottery St Ives several times during his lifetime and probably stocked in U.K. galleries, so it turns up here every so often, but provenance is important on the unmarked pieces

Re: Warren Mackenzie Pot?
Hi
Thanks for the replies.
I don't have too much to offer in way of provenance unfortunately. Bought from a gentleman in North of England who was "downsizing" his very large and mixed collection (from memory he had some Linthorpe Pottery, Empoli glass, West German, Winchcombe and many more). This piece had a handwritten sticker "W Mackenzie" on the base, so either he was sold it as such or determined from his own research. Admittedly, I didn't know enough about Warren Mackenzie at the time to question him further, it wasn't cheap but it wasn't Warren Mackenzie prices either!
Looking further, I don't think the neat scalloped glaze is reflective of Warren's work, but should help with identification.

Re: Warren Mackenzie Pot?
Now that you have told me why to believed it to be by Warren Mackenzie, my advice to you and anyone else is that you should never ever buy anything like this in the future, even if from a dealer, without having some knowledge and being convinced yourself.
As a dealer myself, if this had come my way in a job lot then it would have gone into my "bargain bin" for a couple of quid at most.

Re: Warren Mackenzie Pot?
I would still buy it again, I've enjoyed having it on a shelf for a couple of years, and I still love it regardless of who made it. I am not a label snob in that sense. It was only when I decided to look it up I got a bit of a shock
Warren Mackenzie seemed like a lovely man with good morals, and the amount of research I have done this week I feel I would spot his work a mile off now, although that will probably never happen in my lifetime. Instead I will hope to find more that are similar in the bargain bin for a couple of quid!
