Staffordshire character jug
nteresting one
This characterJug is I believe John Liston as Paul Pyre
Think it is Staffordshire Pearlware with gold gilt
On research I can only find examples fully painted and not with this finish
This example is hand painted detail
The other examples are dated mid 1800s but I would guess this is a later example ?
Thanks

Re: Staffordshire character jug
Paul Pry was a comedy play written in the early 19th century and Liston was the a famous actor of the time,he is depicted in various forms and made in both pottery and porcelain notably from the Derby factory, the earlier Staffordshire figures showing the actor in various poses are the most desirable, most pieces like yours tend to date from the mid 19th century and are relatively common.
