I bought this piece in Italy but I am beginning to think maybe it was made elsewhere
does anybody recognise the design?

thank you for the reply, I believe so

it seems the two pieces were made separately and then joined (where there is a sort of keyhole at the top of the base)

it appears some of the blue glaze over-lapped on to the white base of the head

there are initial marks under the head but the glaze sort of obscures them
