What would you buy with £20k for investment
So we seem to have stopped doing these fun threads (Not just for regulars - ANYONONE CAN JOIN IN - all opinions welcomed) Perhaps it's that we do more in Winter to pass the time
If you were given £20k tomorrow and you had to invest it in ceramics within 6 months what would you buy?
One piece from LR or a shelf-full of Wallwork? Note: You have to spend this on ceramics - no bloody bitcoin, no gold etc.
?

20k doesn't seem to go far in the studio ceramics market these days but if we are allowed to add just a little bit i would go for one of James Tower's superb tin glazed vases.

Roger Capron would be up there on my list and a couple of good Picasso sculptural bits

I think the Picasso/Vallauris name is a good long term call
Re: What would you buy with £20k for investment
I’d buy pottery by respected potters in their 70s-80s on the basis that prices will rise when they die.

My theory is that lesser pieces by good makers will rise the most. Anything by Maltby, Wallwork etc will rise so better to buyt the crappy £50 pieces that % will do well en masse.
I ask this question as prices obviously rose under two years of lockdown (rich middle class with spare holiday money cheering themselves up/investing IMO) but have they now stalled under recession worries? ROLEX prices have dramatically dropped recently by 10-15% where rise upon rise preceded.
I mean if a recession comes is it a good time to buy?

Gold prices usually rise in a recession, and quality antiques as the rich move money from shares into objects. Lower end items are likely to go down in price, imo

We shall see, yes gold goes up in trouble times as 1) its a mitigator against rapid inflation, and 2) easily transportable if you have to 'go' somewhere.
On the low end stuff - what would you say to LR generic tableware is she made such stuff? Surely this would rise with the high end stuff? I'm saying look at low end (rock bottom basic) stuff from famous makers that is dirt cheap now.

Lucie Rie is always popular, and will remain so. Her tableware goes for £1000 a plate so £20K will barely buy you a tea set.
I very much doubt Maltby’s standard ware will ever be worth collecting. But I’d be very happy to blow the whole £20K on Maltby’s individual stoneware pieces

A Rosanjin vase or a Picasso piece but only one piece, if I could buy something that I liked for £20K.
I wouldn't care if it made money or not because I would get £20K's worth of enjoyment out of it.
