Can anyone please tell me what this is

I have found this item but have no idea what it is, hoping someone may be able to enlighten me. It is brass and has a turned wood carrying handle.
It is 21 cm long and the diameter of the tube is 7cm.

Is it open at both ends?

is it the diameter of a fireman's hose?

I was wondering that too, but the handle looks a bit weak.

Could you shout talk into it?

You could I suppose but I don't think it would do anything

Could you fill it with hot coals and wedge something in each end to keep them from falling out?

Ahh yes it might be for carrying hot coals from one fire to light another and a bit is missing?

Someone else has suggested that it could be a lamp/torch

if burning coals were regularly placed inside, there may be evidence still

There's no evidence of coals or burning on the inside

Well the other reason if not heat for the handle is to carry something, so it could be a removable handle to say carry a boat or some bit of kit. You slide it or x2 over something and then can carry it.

Might be a foot warmer in an open topped car or carriage. Unlikely to see soot or anything if they were warming bricks to put inside, or simply got the maid to scrub it out after use.
