Upchurch Pottery Empty Upchurch Pottery

Trying to make out the name on this vase. It’s thrown then squared off by drawing a finger up the inside while still wet to form four “corners” - it’s been well done and is quite a nice piece. The base has a word impressed but I can only make out “church” - I don’t think that’s it all though. Quite  large around 10in tall. Any suggestions?

The pottery was owned by various people during its existence (1913 - 1963) but the real potter behind the operation was Edward J. Baker (1876 - 1955). His family had run a pottery at Hoo, near Rochester from around 1865; he had worked at Doulton Lambeth and also thrown pots for the early "studio potter", Reginald Wells, at his Chelsea Pottery.

Thank you - I’m not usually keen on art pottery, but this vase has a nice feel to it and I really like the way it has been shaped. I’ll do some reading into it.

I used to sell it really well 30 years ago when I would have described it as art pottery, as that is what sold it. However, it is far more like studio pottery than most art pottery and it is something that I still have a fondness for. It still sells but at about a third or a quarter of what it sold for in the late 20th century.
