Hi Emil,
Thankyou for the comment nice to have a date line for the piece, Would this item fall into the desirabe bracket of the factories production or is it more a mundane piece from general production im just trying to get an idea of the pieces attributes. I realise its a difficult question as everybody has their personal taste just curious. Thankyou dan

Upsala Ekeby (Sweden) - Page 3 Empty Re: Upsala Ekeby (Sweden)

I'd say that this isn't really one of the most collectable pieces for several different reasons. I'm sure it's possible to make assumptions that are fairly accurate regarding who designed it but the designer is at the end of the day unknown. Another factor is that is't the "wrong" period. Art deco hasn't really made it big in Sweden (with some exceptions, like Firma Svenskt Tenn and a few others). Post WW2 pottery is much more popular and especially when it comes to the factories that weren't...well, Rörstrand or Gustavsberg. I haven't had my coffee yet but the only swedish art deco pottery I can think of that can cost money is pieces by Ilse Claesson (Rörstrand) and Ewald Dahlskog (Bo Fajans).

An interesting example is Josef Ekberg. His sgrafitto designs from ca 1900-1920 are quite nice and people collect them. However, the green shiny stuff with gold decor he made after that aren't nearly as highly thought of. The best of them can be a bit costly but the simpler pieces are usually a bargain. They have gained some momentum these last few years but they're still (usually) cheap.

A third factor to consider is that the jar is not a unique item. The mid century designer like Atterberg and Simmulson made some unique pieces and they're a different ball game.

Best regards
Emil

A very likely designer is Allan Ebeling. He came to UE in 1928 and I've found two references that match your bowl:

...and I'd be happy to post them once the external links restriction is gone.

Upsala Ekeby (Sweden) - Page 3 Empty Very unusual Upsala Ekeby Swedish vase - Vicke Lindstrand - Fungo

Post by terrierlogic123 on December 14th 2015, 5:59 am

We have had a beautiful Upsala Ekeby vase  (with label and markings) for years but can't ID artist, and also this one is interesting as it is highly irregular in shape and glazing, not typical of their production pieces.  There is a serrated/notched edge at top, very irregular ridges running the length, and a drippy black glaze along edge... see photos.  As you can see, it is marked with "3013" as well as the Upsala Ekeby signature mark.  I did have one person say they thought it was Ingrid Atterberg, but this doesn't seem right to me...

Any thoughts or insights would be appreciated!

I don't know much about Upsala but there might be something on this thread

I'll add your post to the Upsala thread in due course.

Hi!
Your beautiful vase is made by Vicke Lindstrand. The series is called "Fungo" and was made between 1949 and 1955.

Upsala Ekeby (Sweden) - Page 3 Empty Upsala Ekeby bud vase. I've researched, with no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. The bottom is very hard to read. It retains the original label in gold foil. It measures 5.25"H. On the base, I can (barely) see UE and SWEDEN and out of the four numbers I can make out the first and second, "5" and "0". I found it interesting that the artist used paint to "decorate" the bottom, in two of the same colours on the vase.

I can't find out who the artist is, but I LOVE this little vase. It has the original gold foil label - does anyone know when this label was used?

Hi EBV,
Your vase is designed by Hjördis Oldfors for Upsala Ekeby and was produced between 1956-1958. The series is called Poäng and there exists several pieces in that series.

"Poang" is also the name of IKEA's celebrated bentwood chair, which is now in its 40th year of production. Wondering what they had in common to be given the same name I checked the meaning of the word: "Score" according to the Bing translator - so nothing learnt there then   Shrugs

A little cone shaped bud vase or beaker. Felt ring on the base.
There's a similar one in this blog post which I assume has the designer's name but I can't read Swedish http://upsala-ekebysamlarna.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/tema-hjordis-oldfors-del-19-reportaget.html?m=1

I’ve moved your posts to ID My Pottery so members will see them. The other groups are for reference; for pots that have already been identified. I’ll move this in due course if & when the ID is confirmed

I believe it’s by Ingrid Atterberg produced in the ‘50s
