Re: Briglin Pottery
I can see three, I think, although one may be a mouse.

Is this a fake briglin owl?
I'm sure I read on this site somewhere that briglin animals have been faked.
Is this one of them, as I have not seen an owl moneybox with an unglazed face?
Thanks : )

Re: Briglin Pottery
Saw one like this recently with Italy written on the base. It was made by Bitossi. Which would be the more valuable, Bitossi or Briglin, I wouldn't like to say, so a 'fake' can sometimes simply be a copy and still have a market for it.

Thanks Naomi, not really bothered about its value its a piece I bought just after joining the forum. In a way its likely rarer if its a fake

Re: Briglin Pottery
Cant imagine why someone would fake a Briglin owl...
They are not especially rare or valuable.
They are all different Zippy.

Re: Briglin Pottery
Clay and stamp look like my Briglin pieces. It's a decent looking fake if it is. Is Briglin worth enough to be faked? It's still pretty cheap

Agreed, I think it's Briglin. They're not always marked.

Re: Briglin Pottery
This is marked front at the base, but I was referring to a thread I had read on this site about them being faked, I've found it now.

Sorry for any confusion caused.
I really know nothing about briglin animals and had not seen one similar without a glazed face so just wondered if it was real.

Re: Briglin Pottery
Zip - those eye surround shapes are very distinctive and follow on from the white clay originals from the late 50's Here are two white clay versions that are a little earlier than yours. I have owls coming out of my ears ATM and could put my hands on a few more. The big dusty one is probably about the same time as yours if it's groggy clay? Then sixties ENGLAND. They start sharp and clear and after they have made 30,000 they then to be all over the shop.
If you want to confirm they are old use a alternative method based on the Sherlock Holmes 'dust' test, but which uses a smartphone ... you can't fake dead wasps! Two would be from the fifties, one for the sixties and probably only a fly or two from the 70's...

Only just seen this.22 Crawford St. wrote:Don't say the 'H' word I bought a job-lot and there were some unusual ones in it. I thought collectors may appreciate a group photo of the herd since I have them all out together. I have always scoffed about the Briglin animals but they do go for good money in today's market. They will be 'going' - I need to downsize. The worst thing is that I have more, somewhere
So it was you that out bid me.
I was watching a load of stuff at that auction and everything went just above what I wanted to pay (having to add postage!).

Thanks Crawford for the info and the lovely pics of your parliament, I've only just seen your post sometimes the golden plus signs go white as though I've read a post when I haven't.

Re: Briglin Pottery
NP Zip. Celtic Thistle is late 70's and one I rate as some of the other patterns are a bit slap-dash by then. There seems to be a lot more time taken on the Thistle items, they are very consistent as if always decorated by the same person. That would be my guess.
Re: Briglin Pottery
Lastly for Christmas some Briglin Pottery including a tiny white clay Penguin for DD.
Studio Vase - Briglin
Bulbous vase with painted decoration, nicely turned base, Totally unmarked, the decoration looks familiar to me but just can't place it.

Fish Vase - Briglin
Vase with carved fish decoration, looks like Briglin to me . If it is Briglin what age is it and how uncommon, as I've not seen one before.

Re: Briglin Pottery
Ahhhhhh Eeeerrrrr - Dunno. Strange if it is. Decs are very odd, base is odd but I would not say no.
Re: Briglin Pottery
That's nice! - Only thing I don't like is the thin white ground burning through brown - I prefer it whiter. I think the thin brown white ground is later so 70's.
Lovely thing - not common at all.
These two are marked ENGLND = 60's

Re: Briglin Pottery
So the Jury is out then?
I might have been tempted, lots of things look right(ish).

Re: Briglin Pottery
The base made me think Briglin as well, but the decor threw me.
