Looks like Japanese hagi ware with kanji mark, but unusual JM chop, so maybe a US studio potter with Japanese ancestry. Worth trying The Marks Project website of US studio pottery marks

I don’t think so. I don’t know any Leach trained potters who use that mark.

The stoneware body isn't right for Hagi ware and painted decoration is something rarely practised there.
