Plaster African or Indonesian boy Empty Plaster African or Indonesian boy

A strange piece. The seller and I both thought it was carved wood until I did the scratch test on the base and found it was plaster. I’d assumed it was a carved wood piece from Bali - the eyes certainly look Indonesian . but now I don’t know what it is. Plaster is more commonly used in the West.

the face shape looks totally different to any Indonesian carvings I have seen.

Fair enough, except that it’s plaster not wood which points to Europe rather than Africa. (No point making pieces from plaster in Africa when wood carving is so much cheaper and easier.)

It’s possible but it’s not as cold or heavy as stone. And it’s as soft as plaster
