Looks like a Japanese kanji mark

Possibly a Japanese piece made for the Western market
Edited to say, just seen several more pieces with Japanese decoration. Possibly tableware rather than Japanese studio pottery

I agree with all of the things that Naomi has said. It might be possible for me to narrow it down, if I could hold it, to being Japanese, which I think is most likely. However, I am not familiar with the style or the mark.

You guys do a great job from photos but there’s nothing like actually handling a pot to really know what it’s like.

It reads 'Mexico'. Made -or in the style of- Ken Edwards pottery in Mexico. Must be quite a big production of it somewhere, because you do see quite a lot of this style of pottery around.

I'd have guessed Japanese, sideways.

Re: Japanese stoneware bowl. Modern factory produced tableware
Definitely Japanese. Seen several on eBay all with traditional Japanese decoration. Possibly tableware rather than studio ware

I hadn’t realised till I checked the above link that I’d had 2 bowls with same mark but v different decoration. We’ll see if I remember next time I see one. Not Mexican, not Devon but Japanese!

Reminds me of Frances Pollard's style Corfe Castle Pottery Dorset, but it's not his. I would go for Japanese.

I asked a Japanese group. It's まん mann. Contemporary mass produced ware for daily use, often listed as Mino yaki on the Japanese second-hand sites

Re: Japanese stoneware bowl. Modern factory produced tableware
Most, if not all, of the major pottery areas in Japan have factories producing good quality inexpensive ware in this manner. These bowls don't remind me of what I would call the typical Mino styles of pottery but, if Mino yaki appears on Japanese second-hand sites then I wouldn't have any reason to believe that they weren't made there.
However, that is going to have no effect on their value on the secondary market, except to try and persuade a potential buyer that they are worth more because of it.

Still a very nice no matter your view or how you look at, it's a very well made bowl.
