Looks Japanese of the type sold in huge quantities in M&S in the late 20thC, but it might be the vintage form. Looks like transfer printed figures of the type found on geisha ware, which was made in the early 20thC as a cottage industry; decorated a piece rate by women in local towns and villages.

Yes, thank you I had thought about M and S but had ruled that out as every M and S item of pottery I have seen is back stamped. I will go down the geisha ware line as a start
