Here are two pieces.

The blue vase (undated) is about 25cm tall, while the other is just 6cm and is dated 1907.

What do you reckon, Dan: 1907 or 1904?

Do you have any idea of the date of this mark?

Bad news... the shelf that these two were on just fell off the wall and are now history -- along with a bunch of other valuable pottery.

oh no

I think I used own a very similar blue vase. I love that style of martin Bros, the ones that look like seeds or the roots of trees.

Ouch !!!

I've broken a number of items through the years - admittedly not a shelf-full at a time - and feel your pain. My best effort was allowing an upright Dyson vacumn cleaner to topple over onto a coffee table which took out three Keith Murray vases.

The thing that always upsets me most is not the financial loss, but the though that the pieces won't be around for other people to enjoy in future.

I agree. rarity is the main factor not value.
I once agreed to let someone post me a wonderful Guy Sydenham mermaid, he bent my arm by saying it was a matter of honour for him and he needed to show how bomb proof his packing was.
A broken arm was the result.....

There were a couple of Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie vases, an Upchurch piece I liked, plus four Doulton Lambeth items and two Art Nouveau Doulton vases. The Doulton I could possible find again, but studio pieces like the Martin Brothers vases are not replaceable.

I reckon the prob' is the screws that I can get here... they are parallel thread. I have tried to get tapered wood screws, which get a firmer grip as they go further into the wall, but no hardware/building supplies shops here have them. Weird. I will have to have a box of screws posted over. There were four holding the shelf up and they just pulled out of the wall.

I once put up a whole wall full of shelving for my dad, drilling into Victorian lath and plaster walls. He put all his books on them and the whole thing fell off a few days later.

Funny, the smile looks slightly different in each picture.
Nice item. Pity about the damage. There was a substantial sale of Martin Bros pieces at wooley and Wallis in Salisbury last November 2019. In this link similar pieces to yours are a short way down. They are slightly earlier than yours tho.

Hi philpot

Thanks for your comments and the link to Wallis,I will have a look, The damage is very minor and I have managed to repair it quiet well,The smiles are different as there is a face on each side of the jug.
There was a fantastic large one sold here in Australia I think dated 1910 that sold for $8.500.00 +premium ,last year, I will see if I can find an image of it.

Talking about fat wallets, the person who purchased this jug in Australia about I year ago ,Had a fat wallet that is now skinny after paying some where over $10.000 for this jug ,I have manged to find an image of it on my phone that I took prior the auction,It was a huge jug not quiet twice as big as mine.

I would not be surprised if it went back to England,Although there are a few American millionaires that seem to by every martin bros piece that comes up (maybe they bought it) speaking of fat wallets.

I have also added images of my touched up jug.
