mystery primitive silk or flax skein

I believe this is some type of primitive textile tool. possibly used for silk, flax, or wool. Have no info about it, there are no markings anywhere on it. it is made completely from wood. the spool looking part slides off the shaft and can be spun while on the shaft. the person i got it from said it was oriental, but others have said it looks like possibly south or central american, I tend to agree with the south or central american region. any help or ideas would be appreciated. thank you for looking.
