There are some aspects of it, including the way it is marked, that suggest Japanese but the foot just isn't right.

Does it seem heavy?

No, not heavy. Well potted.
Just noticed splashes of white glaze or slip under the decoration - see footrim.

Might it be that the clay used has a white body and it has first been covered all over with the brown glaze/wash that can be seen on the foot?

The mark does seem to be inscribed through the white layer under the brown.
