Trentham Art Ware by John Beswick (Staffs).

This is a MASSIVE two handled vase. It is backstamped Trentham Art Ware. Somebody has suggested that it' s Beswick???  Also what date is it please. Thank you

There was a Trentham Bone China Ltd. that operated in Longton from 1952 to 1957 but your vase is earthenware ............. so it is not from the Potteries but was made in Devon by Devonshire Potteries Ltd. of Bovey Tracey.

They started in 1947 and it is suggested that they used "Trentham Art Ware" from 1959.

This three footed jug is stamped Trentham Art Ware. Is this Beswick?  Pattern number 424.  22 cms tall. Any idea of date?  Thank you.

I found that Trentham Bone China works and didnt think it looked right!  Then I saw Beswick, Trentham on a web site and got very confused by that too!  Thank you for sorting that out. 

So Devonshire Potteries as with the vase but these pieces do look a bit "old fashioned" for the date. I wonder if the company used pre-War moulds bought from the Potteries when companies closed?

Beswick also made a range of Deco shapes called Trentham Art Ware for a retailer in Nottingham from 1934 to 41 and stamped them accordingly. When the contract finished Beswick continued making some of the shapes, but without the Trentham mark.

Tbh, these two pieces of Trentham Art Ware do look Art Deco, and more like Beswick than 1959 onwards.

I think we need a Beswick Trentham Art Ware stamp for comparison to be sure.

I've sent you a link to a pot attributed to Beswick but marked Trenthan Art Ware, and has this stamp. I'd say both pieces are Beswick.

I have a Trentham art pottery cat and it's very different.

I have found the reference that you mention Naomi and I would expect the people responsible for that ought to know more about Beswick than me. Therefore that seems likely as the jug, especially, looks 1930s.

The Nottingham suggestion does seem a bit "neat" though as the river running through Nottingham is the Trent but Trentham itself is about 4 miles from Longton where the Beswick factory was. Maybe?

A retailer in Nottingham commissioned Beswick to produce a number of different Art Deco items for sale between 1934 and 1941 using the name 'Trentham Art Ware'. I'm fairly sure that this is a piece from that range.

We now have examples of the Devon stickers, and so one
can now attribute these larger deco vessels with the printed marks,
and the impressed numbers to being produced by John Beswick,
from c1933-41.
