Einar Guðmundsson and Guðmundur Einarsson (Iceland)
Does anyone know the maker of this piece? It is marked to the base but I was unable to id the pottery. The only potteries from Iceland I know is Glit (but known more from their lava pieces) and Kjarval & Lökken but the marks are different... The piece was made in 1950 according to the date at the base.
It is very nicely done and looks like a pigeon.
Thanks
Simon

Re: Einar Guðmundsson and Guðmundur Einarsson (Iceland)
Ragnar Kjartansson was a sculptor who founded Glit Pottery in 1958, which Wiki lists as the only pottery in Iceland (at the time). Since this bird predates Glit, it must be the work of a sculptor.
Wiki lists a few Icelandic sculptors who set up the Icelandic Sculptor's Society in the 70s. This bird might be by one of them:
Hallsteinn Sigurðsson, Jon Gunnar Árnason, Þorbjörg Pálsdóttir

You're right Naomi, Glit was founded later than 1950. It's difficult to find a good source of Icelandic potteries... Do you know any webs or books that specialize in Scandinavian/Icelandic ceramics?
Thanks

There's a lot on Scandinavian pottery (Freeforms and thelittleblackhouse websites are good), but I've found very little on Icelandic pottery.

That's it, it's all about Danish, Norvegian, Swedish and sometimes Arabia :( Iceland is not that famous for ceramics. I had a few nice pieces by Glit but all were well signed.
I will email freeforms and see what they think.

Thank you NaomiM. Here the vase. Actually is a Glit style. Why different mark? usually Glit lava has a volcano. Early Age?

no, not Glit.
this is a moden piece by Einar Guðmundsson ( hence the e.g)
he is still working and has a shop in central Reykjavík, he is the son of Guðmundur of Miðdal who signed all his pieces with just the mountain.

Great hellilja!
Guðmundur Einarsson (1895- 1963) and Einar Guðmundsson (1932 -)
And now I found the mountain was used by Guðmundur in his studio named Listvinahúsið (Art House) since 1927, with the wife Lydia PálsdóttirIn who studied pottery in Germany.
In 1955 Einar took over the workshop. Many artists worked in Listvinahúsið like Baldur Ásgeirsson, and Ragnar Kjartansson (1923 - 1989) the Glit Studio founder (1958).
In 2004 Guðmundur II son of Einar work together.

Thanks guys! Finally I've id'd the bird https://www.20thcenturyforum.com/t13163-icelandic-pottery-pigeon-made-in-1950
It's made by Guðmundur Einarsson, there are a few animal pieces available on the web, all have that similar glaze. Naomi - thank you for spotting the mark

Glad to be of help with the Icelandic end of things,
Pieces by Guðmundur frá Miðdal sell for good money here (500-700 dollars depening on size), the bird is actually a Ptarmigan. they are common in Iceland.
He made many figurines of icelandic birds and animals.
Cheer
