studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
when i first saw this bowl, i thought it must be a student piece, what with all the cracks n all.... but then i thought, perhaps they're deliberate? make the piece look older etc. There is a clear mark underneath, but not one i recognise. Any ideas?
Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
Mark looks like Lfs or ffs.

yes, perhaps the cracks weren't deliberate, and FFS was all the potter could think of!

Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
can't help thinking it has an oriental influence. But still not closer to identifying the potter.
Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
The mark looks hand done rather than a stamp, so I suspect this is by a hobby potter.

Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
i think you're probably right - i was just hoping there was an outside chance it was by one of those trendy-at-the-moment potters who make god awful ugly clumpy pots that look they've exploded in the kiln (Voulkos etc) ; but on forums such as these, would generally be ID'd as "hobby potters" because their work is actually really bad.
Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
I think the clue is in the little scratch marks round the mark, showing they've spent more time on their monogram than on the pot itself.

On the positive side if we assume that the seller at the Boot Fair bought it then that means at least two people thought it worth buying, so it must have something going for it.

What amuses me at car boot sales is where the seller says, repeatedly, 'It's Studio Pottery' (in capitals), as though that justifies the ridiculous price they're asking for a piece of unmarked or unknown pottery.

Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
It is the same at the big Antiques Fairs. When I ask how much is this they say, "80 quid mate, it's Studio". My follow up question asking who it is by always brings a reply on the lines of, "I don't know but it's Studio and collectable".NaomiM wrote:What amuses me at car boot sales is where the seller says, repeatedly, 'It's Studio Pottery' (in capitals), as though that justifies the ridiculous price they're asking for a piece of unmarked or unknown pottery.
I've never yet picked up anything like this that is worth anything like £80 let alone more.

Ha, ha, yes. It's a bit like in the charity shop where they say 'It's West German" (or Meakin or Ainsley or Spode, etc,) to justify a high price, regardless of the fact it's a boring lump of pottery with neither the glaze nor the shape to justify anything more than a couple of quid.

Charity shops are crazy with there pricing , and oxfam are in a totally different league again, but some times i just walk in look around and shake my head in disbelief, when prices are 3 times higher than what you could possibly sell them for .

Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
Our shop is sending a large, boring, lump of West German pottery off to ebay just because it's got W. Germany on the base. It'll cost over £10 to post, assuming anyone bids for it. You'd pick one up at a car boot for a couple of quid.

W.Germany , i would not buy most of that stuff for even a couple of pound never have really got it , overated and even more over hyped by a handful of folks.

Re: studio bowl with deliberate (?) cracks
There's a lot of nice W. German pottery out there, but I'm not a fan of the big brown ones.
