Leaf plate with weird birds Empty Leaf plate with weird birds

Leaf-shaped plate, approx 8" x 7", with weird handpainted birds. Possibly Art Deco period. Has a creamy matt Carlton-ware type glaze.
Just an arrow mark on the base.
I'm sure we've had these birds before but can't remember if they were id-ed.

I do like the surreal birds if birds are what they are but can't help feeling the pattern and the dish don't really go together.

Do you think that it might have been bought as a white/cream plate and painted later or is that me just being a tit?

It's not one of your run of the mill shapes, so I think chances are it was made for this design.

I think it "goes together" fairly well to be honest.

I have a feeling it may be Portuguese, but I don't really know why Big Laughter

Couldn't find it on the Portugal threads. Thought it might be Vallauris but nothing coming up there either. Back to Carltonware and its British contemporaries.

I'm as certain as I can be that it's not SylvaC, but I agree the matt white glaze is similar.

If I had to guess one of the British makers I think I'd say Shorter, though that's only a guess at best.

I was thinking Shorter & Son they used a lot of low relief decoration, but I cant find any reference to those birds or to an arrow mark either Sad

I think the "arrow" is just a decorators mark to be honest. Shrugs
