R is probably the pottery, and TM the potter's monogram.

Post by Mordeep on August 26th 2015, 8:58 am

Hi all

Got a new mystery on my hands. Picked up a sweet little coffee set with a creamer. Did have 6 cups and saucers but managed to break one before the pictures. Now have a 5 1/2 set lol. It's clearly marked but struck out on working out who it's by. Hope you guys can help.

I wonder if it might be late period Rodmell Pottery? I have no suggestion for the mark on the base.

The mark is definitely his - the RCP pottery mark doesn't match - perhaps he changed it.

Hi Johners2000
This is definitely a pot of Michael Tovey of Rowlestone Pottery (1930-1991) - my dad! He also had a stamp with a single 'R'. It's a nice one - enjoy it.

Hi guys
Just an update to your long conversation. Michael Tovey (1930-1991) (my dad) set up Rowlestone Church Pottery when he retired. He had been an art and ceramics teacher all his life. Most of his pots were practical as well as beautiful. The oak leaf was his design of choice, as well as dragons and birds. His work seems to be better known now than when he was alive. He would be really pleased that his work was appreciated.
Best wishes.
