Derek Beaver, Edinburgh
This heavy studio pottery (or art pottery) vase with a mottled, slightly drippy blue glaze looks and feels quite old.
On the base are impressed Edinburgh, and a monogram which looks like a small D inside a bigger B.
The book shows a mark like this for Dora Billington, but I can't find any reference to her having potted in Edinburgh. Can anyone help, please?

Not Dora Billington
We've had this mark before, but it wasn't identified.

Wow! What a memory! Yes, definitely the same mark, and I can see similarities in the glaze. But sadly it doesn't get us any further forward, because there are hardly any Dora Billington pots on Google images for comparison. Frustrating!
Gordon Beaver, Edinburgh, UK ? - Derek Beaver
This was attributed to Gordon Beaver but I can't find mention of him, so I don't know how reliable that is.
The mark is a B in a hexagonal impressed mark. This one seems to have an overlying D also and a separate A.
Colours don't appear well in this pic.

Re: Derek Beaver, Edinburgh
As you have expressed doubts about the information and, like you, I can't find any reference to a Gordon Beaver or Beever being in that area and making pottery, I think it is best to move the thread here.

Re: Derek Beaver, Edinburgh
I have three pots by this mystery Edinburgh potter, but absolutely no clue as to who he or she might be. Discussed previously on this thread: https://www.20thcenturyforum.com/t10160-blue-pottery-vase-could-it-be-by-dora-billington.
A similar or identical mark is attributed in the BSPM book to Dora Billington, so I did a little bit of investigation to try to find out if Dora Billington might have potted for a time in Edinburgh. She had a long career as a teacher at the Central School of Art and Craft in London, but I couldn't account fully for her whereabouts during 1941/2 in the period when the School was evacuated from London. But I couldn't trace any record of her being in Edinburgh at that time, so that idea turned out to be a dead end.
I feel sure that one day this potter will be identified . . . but when?

Re: Derek Beaver, Edinburgh
That’s a good question. I don’t remember but it must have been unequivocal otherwise I would have put a maybe or possibly in the sentence. There was a Scottish Pottery website which is now behind a paywall so it may have been from that.

Nothing’s appearing. I seem to have lost my Pinterest saves from that website too. I guess it was on one of the now defunct photo hosting sites and they didn’t copy them across to a new one.

Re: Derek Beaver, Edinburgh
Thanks again Naomi. I was wanting to include a chapter about Derek Beaver in a book I'm trying to write about forgotten Scottish potters. Looks like it's going to be a very short chapter
Re: Derek Beaver, Edinburgh
Possibly a long shot but the potter Marshall Coleman says in his blog that he researched Dora Billington and potters of her era like Richard Lunn and Wilfrid Norton. I wonder if he also knows about Derek Beaver?

Thanks again Naomi. I've corresponded with Marshall before and he was very helpful then. I'll see if he knows anything about Mr Beaver.
