Antique ink well 18th Century Empty Antique ink well 18th Century

Antique ink well 18th Century Ink11
Not long got hold of this lovely bronze ink well

Has 5 holes I'm guessing centre to fill and the others to hold quills or pens ?

I would have thought a bit early for pens which were not in general use ?
seems strange to have 4 holders

Any ideals appreciated

Could they have been cut later? And would it have had a glass liner?

Looking at age and wear it seem very old
I have found one on line which is made from lead .

Also maybe a quill holder ?
