This pieces are called "wall pockets", had a displaying purpose  and were very fashionable while the first half of xx century. They were hanging on walls and usually carring ivy and other decorative plants, too. There are some wonderful Art Nouveau wall pockets, the most i've met were german.

I don't think these are by Trentham.

These are definitely not Trentham, in fact are German porcelain but i did want to show you similar Wall Pockets , as you have questioned your item's utility.
