martin smith exhibits at Sainsbury
Went to see the exhibition of Martin Smith 'pots' today at the Sainsbury centre ,a nice selection shown from his early raku bowls to his more recent creations all displayed in a large showcase. I am a bit of a fan of Smiths work but i am not sure if his later works can be considered as pots as they appear more as pure sculpture, some are made from small blocks diamond cut from bricks and glued together with araldite. I think his work is far more appreciated on the continent especially in Holland. His later pieces seem to be quite scarce at auction, what i found interesting was the contrast between his work and the collection of Hans Coper which is housed in the next showcase. The Coper collection is i believe the largest on show anywhere and today they looked amazing with the bright daylight filtering through on the collection.

Re: martin smith exhibits at Sainsbury
So that last piece is that machine cut from one piece? CNC?> ?? Are the black lines done with lasers? Certainly interesting forms and beautifully done
Re: martin smith exhibits at Sainsbury
yes i think you are correct , Martin Smith uses any modern aid available to get the desired result, lasers are certainly used and he incorporates many other materials such as metal , slate and modern adhesives, he has developed from raku pottery ware bowls (which are still very desirable) through to installations and the stunning pieces now created ,whether by computer or laser. He is certainly not a traditionalist.
