Hey guys. I picked up this lamp base and I've no information about the piece.
I was lead to believe it was a rooke but with no signature or stamp can't be certain.
If anybody has any incline about maker, date, that sort of thing, I'd be most grateful

bernard Rooke - Bernard Rooke - Page 8 Empty Rooke or Wallwork lampbase?

Post by NaomiM June 11th 2018, 10:54 am

It’s best to post in ID My Pottery first if it’s still to be verified, and we need a photo of the base
The alternative is Wallwork, as they used to share a studio and some moulds.
There is a very similar one in the Wallwork thread so I’ll move this into ID My Pottery until we get a consensus on who is most likely to have made it

Thanks NaomiM.
The piece has green felt gluded to the base, I have thought about removing it to see if it had any makings underneath but chose not to in the end.

Ha ha, I often remove felt before I’ve even bought the piece. Laughter

Definitely need to remove the felt. Wallwork's mark for this piece was a capital inscribed W alone. Its actually quite rare for one of these Wallwork pieces not to be marked. Whereas, its reasonably common for the Rooke one's not to be marked. Usually the Rooke mark for this type of piece would be a thin painted BR mark. Often glazed over, difficult to find, or just plain missing.
As a matter of interest, where did you find it. Rooke has had a pottery at Swilliland, near Ipswich since the early 70's. His sons also worked with him, and production was substantial. You see a lot of Rooke's work around East Anglia.

Alan Wallwork's pieces like this were generally sold through high end furniture/design shops like the famous Heal's. Nearly all in London.

I removed the felt but can't see anything, I'll keep looking though.
Picked it up at a carboot in Stoke-on-Trent, it looked very strange and interesting amongst the regular bric a brac and for £2 I couldn't leave it.

There was a fashion back in the 70's for using that bluey stuff in ashtrays. Robin Welch did some, and Eileen Lewenstein.

Post by DabbleBabs August 17th 2018, 9:53 am

Hello
I've just bought this at an auction, knowing it was a "something special" but cannot see another online anywhere. And then I found this wonderful forum - I will be a regular!
Can anyone help confirm this or point me to where I could find out more?
Also, should I wire it up for a lamp or leave it as it is, if I was to sell it (may keep and make a lampshade for it, though).
Thank you
Babs

Yes definitely Bernard Rooke. He had a pottery at near Ipswich, and produced a lot of similar designs working with his sons. These are becoming quite trendy now. If you want to use it as a Lamp I would strongly recommend rewiring and changing the fitment. These can be 50 years old now and not up to modern standards.

If you like this type of Lamp Base look up the lamp bases of Alan Wallwork. They shared a studio in the 50's/60's and their work has similar design trends.

Don’t bother wiring it up. I often cut off the wiring of lampbases before selling them because collectors either do it themselves or simply want the base for display. Plus, if you’re not a qualified electrician then technically it’s illegal to do it yourself for resale.

This lovely little critter is a Rooke, though I did not know that at the time I gave him away, only discovered this recently. I still get to enjoy it every day as my better half was the beneficiary.

bernard Rooke - Bernard Rooke - Page 8 Empty Studio lamp base B. Rooke

Post by Maddy January 10th 2019, 11:24 am

Today I wanted to send an e-mail too mr. Rooke himself. I found the address here on the
forum. Does anybody know if rooke@gxn.co.uk might not work or exist anymore? What did I do wrong? My question for mr. Rooke is about a studio lamp base.
Might someone else can help me about the identification?
It isn’t marked ‘Rooke’ or ‘B.R.' anywhere but on seeing different kinds of examples on the internet and here it may well be? Any help or information about the identification would be greatly appreciated.

Originally thought maybe Bernard Rooke. There was another on a selling site exactly the same though, bit sceptical now as no makers mark. It was bought in the Suffolk area so could be? But  need some expertise 🤔thank you. bernard Rooke - Bernard Rooke - Page 8 6c5d0d10
