Winged monster/god? Empty Winged monster/god?

Anyone know what this brass thing is?  It's about 20cm/8" tall.  There are bolt holes on its back just below its neck.

I think you're right - and a quick search for 'brass griffin' showed me several similar griffins that are centrepieces of fan shaped fire screens, so thank you for putting me on the right path Dan.
