studio pottery marked XOMA - probably Greek
Hi. I've had this piece for several months now and have had no luck in trying to ID it.
Good clear mark impressed XOMA within a square, and I have found several pieces with the same mark on various American web sites but none that either ID the maker or give a date.
Quite a large piece - it measures 29 cms in length x 19 cms tall x 6.5 cms deep and weighs just over 1 kg.
I think it can be classed as a vase but quite abstract really.
Any help would be much appreciated.

from a quick web search i can see it was made at Mata Ortiz in the state of Chihuahua Mexice but dating it may prove to be less easy

Hi. Apologies for not getting back sooner. Thanks for the help. I've since found that the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Oklahoma have held exhibitions of work from Mata Ortiz so have been in touch. No joy as yet to id this piece but they have passed the info I sent onto other who have done research in this area. I'll let you know if I hear anything. Thanks

The first is 10" and this one is smaller..say 6".
Many thanks.
The glaze and the clay looks similar to these Christofer, Crete pieces. Could the XOMA be Greek?

It doesn't look like the sort of thing that anyone at Mata Ortiz would make - their pottery is pinch pot, hand burnished sgraffito wares in red, white, brown and black low fired clays.
Greek seems more likely.
