I was at the auction for some of the bidding and viewed on Monday, I think the Poole prices were quite strong bearing in mind that some lots had hairlines - i.e. 256, 259, 270-chip,273-seconds,260-chip, in addition to faults stated in catalogue. Lots 276/7 were nice and consequently did well, I think 279 was overestimated. Good traditional with no faults did well - lot263, 257, especially when commission is added to hammerprice. Clarice Cliff still seems to do well and one Troika lot did 1600 so it wasn't all bad.

good job one of us was at the auction.it just shows how internet info can lead to wrong conclusions and I for one base my market values almost entirely on internet research

Very good, but not quite the cream of the crop. You have to scroll down from the top.

Better amateur pics on ebay for something worth a fiver.

Interesting to see though, some of the potters in the collection eg Andrew Crouch.

But you are right. For an auctioneer that claims to be the leading provincial auctioneer, the quality of detail in their Online photos is poor. Not good enough really,as the majority of their bidding is going to be Online.

But if you are a serious bidder they will send you as many additional pics as you need and those big estimates are because people are paying silly money for lucie rie etc. cos they're trendy.

The estimates are not big. They are all fairly conservative . Its an Estate sale, so all of it needs to sell. As for 'silly money', well its peanuts compared with the King's Ransoms around in the paintings side of the ludicrously hyped contemporary Art market...

I make that 26.4% + 15% + 1.5% = 42.9% if I sold anything

Costs may also include Artist Resale rights of course of 4%.
Those costings are fairly standard amongst Terrestrial auctioneers though. With the Buyer's premium moving ever more higher in the 30 years or so since it was first introduced.
It always feels like daylight robbery when buying or selling from auctioneers. Their excuses being that fixed costs are high. Permanent premises, labour intensive, expertise is costly. Blah blah.
Although truth to tell most auctioneers aren't making a fortune. Even the high end Sothebys, Christies etc make more profit from their Private Sales and Estate Agency sidelines.
How much does a solicitor charge? Or further up the scale, a Barrister? Dental treatment costs a fortune. So do Vets.

Yeah understood any shops mark up it at least 100% often a lot more.

I was today checking out the wine on a new completed Soho restaurant and the mark up on cost is 300-380% (so a £10 bottle goes for £30+) and remember they buy wholesale. ... does not take a trained chef and a half million pound kitchen to pop a cork either.

Worth perusing as a snapshot of the Studio market as of this moment. In general the star Lots glittered brighter than ever, and the more pedestrian were exactly that. Several of the Rie did not sell, there were a number of issues with condition tho. Long gone are the days when Bernard Leach pieces were up there with the most valuable in the pack.

98% sell rate. £431,000 Total incuding commission.
This was a collection mostly acquired in the late 80's and early 90's. I wonder how much prices increased in near 30 years?

probably to hint that they are getting on and so you might not get many more where these came from.

Indeed. Robin Welch's pots seem to be making a premium at auction atm, probably because he's in his 80s

The market for studio potter is getting wider, and everybody is looking for collecting opportunities. Now Robin Welch is a superb potter who produces lovely painterly pots of great form. Moreover he has been at the top of the field for near 50 years. He did study at the Leach pottery for a while.
Compare his prices with those of John Maltby-both painterly potters- and his pots look very attractively priced. Though for how long, is another matter!

Since when did it go to 25% Big Shock

that's extortionate. But only charging 15% for the seller. So they still get their 40% of hammer.
