Any ideas when it was made?

The cross mark under the "Made in England" is under the glaze.  I think it's Moorcroft, but can't quite make it out. :con1:

Hello
I believe that the MOORCROFT MADE IN ENGLAND backstamp has been in use since c1986. Your bowl features the IRIS pattern and should be relatively recent. You can find more information about MOORCROFT marks at

Thanks for the link. I suspected later in the company product line considering were I got it. The page says the MOORCROFT MADE IN ENGLAND backstamp has been in use since c1949. It's hard to actually see the marks since they're focusing on the labels and not the marks. It did change in c1986 and the one shown has a flag and date stamp as well as the WM monogram.

Another recent find, I've had a lot of Moorcroft over the years but never one like this. Not seen a paper lable on the base before either. Ideas on a date?

W. Moorcroft Ltd. Burslem (Staffs). Empty Booty Bargain, Moorcroft vase

Post by keramark May 20th 2012, 11:25 am

Hi Guys,  went to a car booty this morning that i did'nt particularly want to go to until my buddy dragged me there and i found this, was absolutely covered in oil and sticky Gunge from the ladies garage where her hubby had been dumping all his fag ends into it, there it was sitting on the table with an old wooden Gavel sticking out of it which i took interest in, as i lifted it out of the vase i realised that the little of the tube lining i could see peeking through the dirt just could possibly be !. I asked the lady how much !,  £4 she said, " it's old, it belonged to my mother and i'm sorry about the dirt ",- " Don't have to apologise says i ",  i gave her the money and thanked her kindly, then i went and washed it in the gents to reveal the pattern and the marks.  Well Chuffed i was, and am... Just goes to show,  it's still out there ...   wondering if anyone knows the pattern and possibly the age !!! ...  Thank you in advance all ... Alan ..  Excellent

Congratulations on your great find, not an expert in Moorcroft by any means, but I believe that pattern might be hibiscus which was first designed by Walter Moorcroft in about 1949, but was produced for a long time and may still be, not sure. The made in England impressed mark makes it quite a modern possibly the 80's again not 100% certain on that date.Walter is the son of William who took over after Wiliams death. The signature is WM for Walter Moorcroft, again further research needed to check but I think this signature is used on all pieces produced by the factory.

No Moorcroft expert either - but looking through my Moorcroft book by Paul Atterbury:-

It looks to have the impressed moorcroft mark used from about 1949-1986.
The Walter Moorcroft signature looks to be the one used from 1945-1949.
So if that is correct, this would put the vase at 1949, which does match with the other opinion you've had.

A VERY nice find Most Excellent

Thank you very much for that Celtic_Fan, so my 1948-50 guess is probably right !, even though this is not my thing i firstly thought Hibiscus for some strange reason !!!, must have been all those days tramping the fairs and Newark ... lol ... Excellent

Post by pelops October 13th 2012, 11:45 am

Hi,

I have a Moorcroft Vase which is signed by William Moorcroft and dates to c1925 but cannot find the pattern anywhere.

Is there anyone who can positively identify what the Pattern Name is as I have had no success whatsoever?

Any help is much appreciated.

Many thanks
Andrew

Hi Celtic_Fan,

thanks for that, I didn't recognise it because it seems a different colourway and better painted than the usual.

I think I may be wrong about the date then. What date would you give it?

Also, is it by William or Walter?

Many thanks

Hi Andrew,

I'm no 'expert' on Moorcroft, but I do like it and so have a book to look things up. But I'm quite good at my plants, so recognised the flower and was able to use my book for the design name.

Any Moorcroft collectors here may be able to date it acurately for you.

But - going back to the book to answer you. Columbine was Walter's first independant design, drawn in 1947. It says that it was "confined to a few pieces only until the early 1980's when he designed a complete range."

Not having a 'Royal Warrent' label could indicate it was made after 1978 - although any label could have come off or I don't know if every vase produced had one during the years it was used.

Hopefully someone with knowledge will chip in and let us know.
