Zebra Striped Pot
Not something I have ever come across before, quite thick and heavy for it's size. Any ideas as to origin please

Re: Zebra Striped Pot
I suppose it is likely to be by a hobby potter.

Re: Zebra Striped Pot
We really need a photo of the base, regardless of whether it's marked of not.

Re: Zebra Striped Pot
I'm wondering if it's foreign - South African, maybe.

am curious as I am still learning about pottery but how can you tell from an unmarked base whether it is a studio piece or hobby?

Studio potters tend to go to college &/or are apprenticed to professional potters, so their potting styles have a certain look to them - most learn from a standard of potting styles and finishes to their bases. Hobby potters, on the other hand, tend to be self taught or have attended less rigorous adult education pottery courses and so their styles are less well developed and more variable.
I wondered if it was from South Africa because it has the traits of a hobby potter, and may have been made by a potter who is self taught and producing pottery for the tourist market.
