Welcome to the forum Happy

It does look turn of the century or early 20th Century, but it could be later. The shape is based on the Chinese baluster vase, but I'm not sure if it's oriental. There seems to be an old price written on the base of 13/? (possibly thirteen shillings and ? pence, which was a lot of money in those days. Or it could be Continental, francs?).

Hi Naomi, I think our paths cross on pinterst! My instinct is its British, I know what you mean about chinese baluster though. It is beautifully thrown and very heavy, and yes I think of good quality which is why I am loathed to pass it on without seeing if i can find out more!! The writing is not pencil as it will not rub away. emma x

Looking at the base again it might be 13/- for thirteen shillings, which would point to it being British. Unfortunately without a makers mark it's very difficult to know who made it.

Shape and glaze seem right, but it's the wrong base.

Langley in their various guises only seem to have made single glaze Art wares around 1924 and not in this shape. The stoneware body is certainly more Midlands stoneware than the Potteries but as with Langley, this shape doesn't appear to be one used by Denby either.

The major auction houses have got rid of most of their real experts and replaced them with youngsters with degrees, who cost less, so what they say will be most intriguing.

Whatever they say, double check it. We've had some right corkers before now.
