Side Saddle Table Lamp

Post by Flintztone on Mon Jan 21, 2013 4:59 pm

Purchased in the late 1970's through TDE(Fancy Goods)Ltd. Please can you help me find who made this. The figurine does have 3 metal light fittings with 3 glass lamp shades. Unfortunately one of the shades is damaged, but I have been told that it can be easily replaced. Pictures will be posted within the next few days. Not sure as to the material used in design.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Looks like it may be moulded resin.

Yes, I do think it might be some sort of resin. Some areas are hollow. I just don't know for sure. At first I thought it might be unglazed porcelain. Would this be a possibility? This is over 18" and very heavy without the fittings. The covering to the bottom is felt and has numerous labels as shown in these extra pictures.

I doubt it's porcelain to be honest, at room temperature does it feel as cold as porcelain would? or warmer?

....................... and I don't think you would have described it as being heavy if it was porcelain.

It looks like Plaster of Paris - which would account for the weight - or it could be resin, or it could be a combination of the two, ie, 'reconstituted stone'.

No weight was given so in answer to your welcomed contribution, that would depend on the individual, that is........ on how much load they can lift. Laughter I'm extremely fragile if you care to know. Hobbled

Your probably right Potty. I have just felt it under room tempreture which is quite warm and it is very cold. It has been in the room for over 2 days now. It could be plaster of paris NaomiM when you refer to the weight. Would this be why it is cold?

I've tried carrying out scrapings with my nail, thinking it might leave some traces of deposits, but that has not worked. It is a vey hard and fragile substance. Please don't jump on me if I have described anything incorrectly. Hobbled

It looks a bit like the matt porcelain used by Goebels, but I'd expect it to be lighter if it was - unless the base is a different composition.
If it's resin you'd see some small bubbles along the creases.

I still say it's a type of resin or some form of polymer at least. Cheeky Happy

TDE(Fancy Goods) Ltd do appear to still operate from 1st Floor 164-168 Cricklewood NW2 3ED and are described as "Wholesalers of china and glassware and cleaning materials"!

I would think Academy might be the company that made it.

I've not been able to identify any bubbles within the creases NaomiM.

The label does say Academy studio_pots. The building within the label looks very familiar to the La Madelein Church. I'm just curious as to the chosen label now. I've viewed the TDE Company and aware of some of the whoesalers they are currently using. The only thing is, that the postal address is different and I am trying to find out what wholesalers they used to use when in operation at the address postcode stated in my initial query. Unless that is, the 2 is meant to be Z within the postcode?

This site shows one that does have the same style of base and the light fittings and glass shades are identical in style to mine(currently not posted). monstermarketplace.com / lady-on-horse-lamp

I'm now wondering if this is a unfinished piece, when looking at this site. Referring to paint work and unglazed.

Your probably right potty, unless someone comes up with something different.

If you mean in NW2 3ED, that would definitely be a 2

The postal address for TDE(Fancy Goods) Ltd is still the same as that on your lamp and they were/are the wholesalers. The fact that on the base of your lamp it has NWZ 3ED rather than NW2 3ED tells me that the lamp wasn't made in this country and at a guess was made in the Far East despite the "Academy" label.

I have moved this to the Lighting section as it seems more appropriate.
