I have a little bud vase sold to me by David many years ago. That has only the pottery mark.

David sold me this one also. he was a gentleman. He took his time to point out where he had left a thumb-print in the glaze. To be honest, for me, that added to the interest.

David's son, Simon, told me that he did alot of the foxglove decoration whenever he was visiting.

pot-bellied amateur wrote:My understanding has been that a simple Lowerdown Cross stamp indicates that it may have been potted by David or Jeremy but equally it may have been by anyone else there.

Am I wrong in that?
The Lowerdown cross was used on functional ware and on decorative pieces, which were sold for less than pieces with David's personal seal.

I did buy a pot once from David that just had the Lowerdown cross mark and he said that he had thrown it and decorated it. He added that he thought it was rather good so he should have put his personal seal on it as well and then he could have charged me more!

So basically the Lowerdown cross mark tells you that it was made at the pottery and could have been thrown and decorated by the same person or a different person. Going back this would have included John Maltby and Tim Andrews as well as Simon, Jeremy and Robert Tinnyunt amongst others.

Interesting to note that the foxglove was painted by different hands , Iv'e just looked at the 5 I have and although all good , some are a tad neater than others , it's not an easy thing to do unless you practice quite a bit .

John was there for 3 years in the early 1960s and other potters who worked there and subsequently went on to start their own potteries include Mary Rich, Elizabeth Raeburn and Warwick Parker.
